Surface map
The public You.com landscape should at minimum separate consumer agents, Research Agent/ARI, Smart/Web Search API, and Live News API. The first answers a user in an interface, the second builds a multi-step report, and APIs return data to an application. One You.com domain does not imply one retrieval pipeline; name the exact surface and documentation version.

Web Search API as application input
You.com describes the Web Search API as real-time web data with annotations, URLs, and snippets for AI applications. That is an application-facing retrieval contract, not an explanation of how a consumer agent forms an answer. Audit response fields, canonical URLs, query date, and your application logic separately from visible You.com citations.

Research and ARI
Research Agent is described as a multi-step mode that runs multiple searches, analyzes sources, and assembles a report; You.com materials also describe ARI for deep research and links to relevant passages. Figures such as ‘up to 30’ or ‘up to 400’ belong to different public product contexts and must not be turned into a promise for every query.

What a citation means
A link to the original page or a highlighted sentence is a strong user-facing verification signal, but not proof of why it was selected. Preserve the proposition next to the URL and check whether the source supports it. In an API record, distinguish annotation, snippet, and URL: they may help a model, but are not identical to an interface citation.

Consumer controls and models
The consumer experience may offer different agents, models, answer modes, files, and web-connected research. A selected model name does not disclose the search index or source-selection rules. Record agent, model, web state, prompt, language, region, and uploaded inputs; changing any parameter makes the comparison conditional.

Access, plans, and the enterprise boundary
You.com describes consumer access, Pro/Team/enterprise scenarios, and APIs using separate keys. A feature mentioned on a marketing page is not proof that it is available in a particular account or region. State plan, sign-in method, endpoint or UI, date, and the exact capability observed.

What can be measured
For consumer Research, measure answer presence, visible link count, highlighted passages, claim-to-source support, and repeatability. For APIs, measure latency, result fields, freshness, relevant-URL share, and how your application uses sources. Do not mix these metrics with crawl visits: a bot visit to a site does not prove the page entered a You.com answer.

Reproducible protocol and unknowns
Run one panel of definitions, comparisons, and freshness questions in RU and EN. For each mode preserve exact prompt, date, region, account, agent, model, web state, full answer, URLs, and cited passage. Repeat after 24 hours and after a source change. Unknowns include the complete index, fan-out, domain weights, deduplication, web fallback rules, and reasons for a particular citation; label explanations of these mechanisms as hypotheses.

What this does not prove
- You.com materials span consumer, enterprise, and API contexts; plan, region, interface version, and ARI access must be checked separately. Marketing statements about source counts do not replace a reproducible test of a particular answer.
