DuckDuckGo Search Assist and Duck.ai: private search with controllable AI

DuckDuckGo officially describes two AI features. Search Assist appears beside traditional results and answers a search query briefly. Duck.ai provides a private chat experience with supported models and follow-up dialogue.

Both features may be free and require no account, but their jobs differ: Search Assist is an answer-and-links layer in search, while Duck.ai is conversational. A publication appearing in one does not prove that the other used it.

DuckDuckGo’s help page says Search Assist scans the web for relevant content and uses AI-powered natural-language technology to create a brief answer. Responses are automatically generated from the sources found and cited.

That describes public behavior, not a ranking formula. A source link proves it was displayed in a particular response; it does not prove that the page was the only input or that the selection is stable.

DuckDuckGo says Search Assist always links directly to one or two sources. A user can select More to expand the answer and see more detail. The source is part of the answer experience and is meant to lead to fuller information.

For measurement, record link count, order, visible anchor or domain, and the answer text associated with each link. Do not turn “one or two sources” into a citation guarantee for every query: the feature may not appear or may not answer.

DuckDuckGo documents DuckAssistBot as a crawler that crawls pages in real time for AI-assisted answers. The help page says this data is not used to train AI models and that answer sources are prominently cited.

For publishers this is a separate control plane: a site can disallow the DuckAssistBot user-agent in robots.txt, after which the change normally takes effect within 72 hours. DuckDuckGo says opting out does not affect organic search rankings.

Users can choose Search Assist frequency in Search Settings or through the answer gear: often, sometimes — the default, on-demand, or never. In the DuckDuckGo browser, the equivalent control is under Settings → AI Features.

The separate noai.duckduckgo.com site turns off Search Assist and Duck.ai and filters AI-generated images by default. It is a useful control condition: duckduckgo.com and noai.duckduckgo.com are not the same interface.

DuckDuckGo describes its AI approach as private, optional, and anonymized, without a required account. Its separate help page says Search Assist answers are sourced from the web beside ordinary results, while Duck.ai offers access to several chat models.

These are product-policy statements, not proof that every individual response has identical anonymity properties or sources in every region. A report should keep documented policy separate from observed response behavior.

A publisher can check crawlability and make an explicit decision about whether DuckAssistBot may use pages as potential sources for AI-assisted answers. robots.txt is the documented opt-out mechanism for that crawler; private data still needs authorization controls.

After changing robots.txt, account for the documented delay of up to 72 hours and inspect logs. Blocking DuckAssistBot is not removal from organic search and does not reveal which other systems may have received the document.

Search Assist and Duck.ai are optional features, and frequency and availability depend on settings, browser, and the current product. Official help does not publish a complete matrix of languages, regions, source selection, and internal display thresholds.

The precise procedure selecting one or two sources, the full retrieval trace, signal weights, and the relationship between organic ranking and an AI-assisted answer remain unknown. One citation or a DuckAssistBot visit cannot establish causality.

Pre-register questions, language, region, browser, and Search Assist frequency. Repeat the panel under sometimes and on-demand, then run a control on noai.duckduckgo.com. Preserve the full answer, More state, source count, URLs, timestamp, and whether the feature appeared.

In parallel, inspect server logs for the DuckAssistBot user-agent and compare IPs only with DuckDuckGo’s official list. Separate crawl, organic result, Search Assist source, and Duck.ai conversation in the result. Publish omissions and denominators; a visit is not citation evidence.
