Brave Search and Ask Brave: an independent index, answers, and links

Brave Search is a search engine with ordinary web, news, image, and video results. AI Answers is a user-facing feature inside the results page, not a separate submission directory. Ask Brave extends that flow with conversation, longer answers, and Deep Research.

These surfaces should remain separate in a report: an organic result, a short AI Answer, and an Ask Brave response have different interfaces, lengths, and observable link sets.

Brave describes its index as independent and says it is supported by Web crawling plus the voluntary, privacy-preserving Web Discovery Project in its browser. The API FAQ also says its crawler does not advertise a differentiated user-agent and should not receive special treatment from sites.

That does not mean every URL will be found. Brave ties crawling to ordinary crawlability: a search-engine block or noindex can exclude a page. An outside observer cannot see the complete internal discovery graph.

Brave’s official description says AI Answers provide a concise summary in response to a question and are based on Web search results. Brave emphasizes provenance: source links are shown for key claims so users can assess the answer.

This supports the path “query to search to a sourced short answer,” but does not establish causation between a particular page markup choice and inclusion. A changed answer does not identify which internal stage changed.

Ask Brave is described as a more detailed conversational surface: it supports follow-up questions and Deep Research when thoroughness matters more than latency. Brave presents it as a separate experience alongside quick AI Answers.

A study should store the surface and mode. Do not collapse a short AI Answer and an Ask Brave dialogue into one “Brave citation” metric: they may issue different searches, use different context, and expose different links.

In AI Answers, sources appear as links associated with key claims in the concise response. Brave’s Answers API also documents inline citation tags and an enable_citations parameter; that is an API contract, not a promise that the consumer interface uses identical markup.

Record the full answer, link labels or positions, the canonical URL after navigation, and the answer passage associated with each source. Treat a link as an observation from one run, not as a permanent domain property.

Brave’s results interface exposes settings and feedback through the gear icon. For developers, the Search API documents country, language, SafeSearch, search-context size, and Answers modes; Goggles can filter or rerank results.

Those controls change experiment conditions. Store country, search language, SafeSearch, surface, and active filters in every observation. Comparing unfiltered RU with EN under Goggles is not one controlled sample.

Start with deliverable HTML, permitted crawling, no noindex directive, and clear page text. Then run the same question in Brave Search AI Answers and separately in Ask Brave. Preserve date, market, language, full answer, and every visible link for each run.

Classify outcomes as URL discovered, URL present in ordinary results, URL shown among AI sources, and URL cited in this particular answer. A crawler visit or schema.org markup is not evidence of the final outcome.

Brave Search is publicly accessible, but a particular AI feature and its answers may depend on region, language, interface, and an active experiment. The official help distinguishes AI Answers from Ask Brave without publishing a universal availability matrix for every market.

Store the date and actual market in a profile rather than saying Brave always shows a feature. If a surface is absent, that is a valid availability result, not proof that a page can never be a source.

Brave does not publish a complete source-ranking formula for AI Answers or Ask Brave, weights for individual signals, a full retrieval trace, or a stable reason why one page was selected over another. The API citation option describes response format, not internal selection.

A claim that a page received a link because of factor X is a hypothesis without a controlled experiment. This profile supports availability and observed-citation measurement; it does not promise ranking, inclusion, or future citation.

Prepare a fixed panel of questions in one topic and repeat it in Brave Search with the same locale, country, and SafeSearch. Capture ordinary results and AI Answers, then run the questions in Ask Brave in a fresh session with the same number of follow-ups. Record time, URLs, visible links, and errors.

Repeat after a declared interval to estimate stability, not to select a flattering screenshot. Publish denominators: how many prompts produced an answer, how many linked to the page, and how many mentioned the entity without a link. Do not treat a crawler hit as proof that a document was used.
